Orban govt’s decision to welcome migrants causes internal political uproar

It caused an uproar in Hungarian internal politics, that despite its several months-long government communication, Hungary accepted 1300 refugees. Kristof Altusz, the Deputy State Secretary for European and American Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spoke about it a few days ago. Jobbik would call an extraordinary session of the parliament because according to the party Fidesz deceived the country and its voters too.

Speaking to Times of Malta, Kristof Altusz said that – even though the Orban-government is constantly saying that Hungary is not accepting migrants – 1300 refugees have been secretly resettled in Hungary. According to the official, the decisions were kept secret for the sake of the refugees’ safety.

On Friday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto rebutted his words, saying that the reception is not happening “secretly”.

“People who qualify for refugee status or protection according to the Geneva Convention have nothing to do with the illegal immigrants the European Union wants to bring here based on the mandatory resettlement quota. So it’s a totally independent issue. According to the Geneva Convention, we are not accepting refugees secretly, it’s a constant procedure that all countries are doing basically non-stop, because of someone comes and issues an application, we have to handle it,”

Szijjarto said.

The biggest opposition party, Jobbik reacted heatedly to the news about accepting migrants, because the government has been accusing the opposition of being pro-immigration, and communicated everywhere that Hungary is not accepting migrants. Jobbik says the “deception of the century” is being unveiled. According to the opposition party, Prime Minister Viktor Orban should make it clear to the public: who are those 1300 refugees, how they ended up here, where do they come from, where do they get their income from and where are they now.

“If Viktor Orban is not willing to answer this question in an open and straightforward manner, he admits that in reality, he fulfilled the quota behind the people’s back, stabbing them in the back,”

said Peter Jakab, Jobbik’s spokesman on Friday.

Gabor Vona, Jobbik’s prime ministerial candidate said on Saturday that his party calls for an extraordinary session of the parliament, where Viktor Orban can speak about the 1300 secret migrants.

Vona reminded that the national consultation, Europe’s most expensive referendum campaign, the several unsuccessful attempts to amend the constitution, and the still ongoing anti-Soros campaign are all about the government protecting the country from immigration and multiculturalism.

“Instead of that the government is following the Soros-plan, so Fidesz has deceived the country and its voters too”,

Vona said.

Hungarian press had already reported before that despite opposing the relocation mechanism, Hungary is accepting refugees. Magyar Nemzet reported in December, based on the Immigration and Asylum Office’s (BAH) publicly available data that between January and November 2017, the country gave asylum to 1148 people.
