Don’t expect the EU to topple Orban – MEP

The possibilities of EU institutions to put pressure on Hungary’s government are limited, and don’t even want to really intervene, MEPs told Hungarian news site 24.hu, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“It’s not that EU who should topple Orban. We can’t even say that he has to be toppled. The Hungarian people must decide in elections, who they want to see in government,”

an S&D MEP told the news site. Several Hungarian MEPs agree that it’s harmful when EU politicians are threatening Hungary without actually wanting or being able to intervene. “They are only helping Fidesz because they give basis to their claims that the Hungarian government is being attacked”, a Hungarian left-wing MEP said.

24.hu reminded that infringement procedures are not completely weightless, several of them developed into court cases and Hungary might have to pay fines. “We know how Fidesz is representing these EU procedures, but believe me, they are taking it seriously”, an EPP MEP said.
