“The good European identity enriches local, regional and national identities”, Hungary’s European Commissioner Tibor Navracsics said at the Pannon University in Veszprem on Friday.
The Commissioner for Youth, Sport, Education and Culture explained at the event that European identity is “not about learning Esperanto and forgetting that we are Hungarian”. He stressed that today there are already nine million European citizens who participated in the Erasmus programmes and almost all of them got a European identity without destroying their own national identity. “I’m a good European, if I’m a good citizen of Veszprem, the Dunantul region and Hungary, if I’m proud of these loyalties and a European identity is enriching them in addition,” he explained.
According to Navracsics a European identity is necessary, which symbolises the relationship between national and European interests. He added that the good European interest is not one which contradicts national interests, and the good national interest is not one which is against Europe’s interests. The good national interest, according to the Commissioner, is in harmony with Europe, and the good European interest can be harmonised with national interests.
