Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto announced that Hungary vetoed the Ukraine – NATO Commission meeting scheduled for December.
“Hungary cannot support Ukraine’s integration aspirations,”
– Peter Szijjarto told a press conference on Friday. He recalled that Hungary used to be the “loudest supporter” of Ukraine euro-atlantic integration until September, but considers the country’s education law “a stab in the back“. The minister reiterated that the Hungarian government will use every possibility to pressure Ukraine to withdraw the law which “brutally restricts” the rights of national minorities.
There is no way to bypass the Hungarian veto since a unanimous vote is necessary for the convening of the NATO-Ukraine Commission, Szijjarto stressed. According to UNIAN, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has not yet officially reacted to the statement by the head of the Hungarian foreign ministry. Hungarian diplomacy has already made some serious steps in international organisations.
